Paediatric (children's) dentistry at Singh Advanced Dentistry in Gardens, Cape Town covers check-ups, cleaning, prevention and gentle treatment for babies, children and teenagers.

We take children's visits at their pace, so they grow up comfortable with the dentist.

## Is this right for me?

- Your child is due for a first visit or check-up
- You've noticed a dark spot, chip or sensitivity on a tooth
- Your child is nervous about the dentist
- You'd like advice on crowding, thumb-sucking or mouth-breathing

## A first visit

We suggest a first visit around your child's first birthday, or when the first teeth come through. It's short and relaxed: a look at the teeth and gums, and advice on brushing, diet and teething.

## Prevention

Regular check-ups, gentle cleaning, fluoride and fissure sealants help protect new teeth from decay. Sealants are a thin protective coating painted onto the grooves of the back teeth.

## Treatment when it's needed

Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth, so decay in them is worth treating. We use tooth-coloured fillings and explain each step to your child first.

Dr Aneesa Mohamed has extensive experience treating children, including treatment under conscious sedation and general anaesthesia when it's needed.

## Early orthodontic advice

If we notice crowding or habits such as thumb-sucking or mouth-breathing, we'll talk you through whether early treatment such as Myobrace, or clear aligners for older children and teens, might help.

## How it works

1. **Meet the dentist:** A relaxed first visit so your child can get to know us.
2. **Check-up and cleaning:** We check teeth and gums, clean gently and talk you through what we find.
3. **Your plan:** If anything needs treatment, we explain the options and costs before we start.
4. **Review:** Regular check-ups, usually every six months, keep small problems small.

## Frequently asked questions

### When should my child first see a dentist?

Around their first birthday, or when the first teeth appear. Early visits are mostly about getting comfortable and preventing problems.

### Do baby teeth really need fillings?

Often, yes. Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth, and untreated decay can cause pain and infection. We'll explain the options for your child.

### How can I help my child feel relaxed?

Keep it positive, avoid words like "hurt", and bring them along to a family member's check-up first if you can. We'll go at their pace.

### What are fissure sealants?

A thin protective coating painted onto the grooves of the back teeth to help keep out food and bacteria. It's quick and doesn't involve drilling.
