## Everything you need to know about root canal treatment

### What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected pulp from inside a tooth. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can allow bacteria to reach this space.

Treatment aims to retain a tooth that might otherwise need extraction. The canals are cleaned, shaped, disinfected and sealed, then the tooth is restored with a filling or crown. Suitability depends on the remaining tooth structure and the condition of the surrounding tissues.

### Signs you may need an assessment

- Persistent toothache or pain when biting or chewing.
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the stimulus is removed.
- Swollen or tender gums, a gum swelling that drains, or an unpleasant taste.
- A tooth that has darkened after an injury.

Some affected teeth cause few symptoms, so an examination and dental X-rays may be needed. Swelling with fever needs urgent assessment. Seek emergency care if swelling affects breathing or swallowing.

### How Waterlase disinfection is used

Waterlase uses laser energy with water and may be used as an adjunct during canal disinfection. After access and mechanical preparation, an appropriate laser-assisted protocol can help clean the canal system alongside irrigation. The aim is to reduce bacteria and debris in areas that can be difficult to reach.

Laser use does not replace the other stages of root canal treatment or guarantee complete sterilisation. Dr Nivy Singh assesses whether this approach is suitable for your tooth and discusses its role, risks and alternatives.

### What to expect at your visit

Your visit starts with a discussion of symptoms, medical history and imaging where indicated. Local anaesthetic is usually used, and a rubber dam helps isolate the tooth. An opening allows access to remove affected pulp and prepare the canals.

Cleaning and disinfection are followed by sealing, sometimes over more than one appointment. A temporary filling may protect the tooth between visits. A final restoration, often a crown for a heavily weakened tooth, helps protect the remaining structure.

### Aftercare and follow-up

Tenderness on biting can occur for several days. Follow your individual aftercare advice, avoid chewing until numbness wears off and avoid hard foods on a temporarily restored tooth. Continue gentle brushing and cleaning between teeth.

Ask about suitable pain relief, particularly if you take other medicines or have medical conditions. Contact the practice if pain worsens, swelling develops or the temporary filling comes out. Attend follow-up appointments and arrange the final restoration as advised.

**Does root canal treatment hurt?**

Local anaesthetic aims to keep treatment comfortable. Experiences vary; tell your dentist about any discomfort so care can be adjusted.

**How many visits are needed?**

One or more visits may be needed, depending on the tooth, infection and restoration required.

**Is laser disinfection necessary for every tooth?**

No. Its use depends on clinical assessment and complements established cleaning and irrigation methods.

**Can a treated tooth become infected again?**

Yes. Further decay, cracks or leakage can cause problems; ongoing oral hygiene and dental reviews remain important.
